UNCW Creative Writing Alumnae Christina Clark (’16 MFA) and Kathleen Jones (’14 MFA) Earn Top Honors at James Applewhite Poetry Competition

UNCW creative writing alumnae Christina Clark (’16 MFA) and Kathleen Jones (’14 MFA) were both recognized during the North Carolina Literary Review’s (NCLR) James Applewhite Poetry Competition.

Clark is the recipient of the 2017 James Applewhite Poetry Prize for her poem “Adrift in the Port City.” She also earned an Honorable Mention for her poem “Big Bad.” Clark will receive prize money from the North Carolina Literary and Historical Association and her poems, including a third, “Fairytale Rules for the 21st-Century Woman,” will be published in the 2018 issues of the NCLR. Jones was one of six poets to receive an Honorable Mention for her poem “Body Between Mirror and Wall,” which will also appear in an upcoming issue of the NCLR.  

The James Applewhite Poetry Prize was established in 2011. This year 237 poems by 70 poets were submitted for consideration.
