Dear students, faculty, staff, and friends of the College of Arts and Sciences:

I am pleased to share the new issue of Inside CAS with you and hope you enjoy reading about some of the great things happening in the college.

This issue highlights several of our incredible students recently recognized for their scholarship, notable events and community engagement initiatives, and important announcements, like the record-setting, $5 million gift to support new pharmaceutical sciences and chemistry programs that the university received.

It has been an extremely exciting year thus far, full of milestones and achievements. Earlier this month, we celebrated the Class of 2017 at UNCW’s 93rd Commencement exercises – the largest to date with more than 2,200 undergraduates, 400 graduate students and 15 doctoral students.

Inside CAS focuses on the academic endeavors of our students and our faculty, which many times overlap through applied learning and collaborative scholarship. This newsletter is an example of the college’s commitment to experiential learning; you will notice that CAS students are the authors of most of the articles inside. Applied learning is critical to our mission to advance knowledge and creativity. It enhances research, teaching, and learning, and has become a hallmark of our college.

The College of Arts and Sciences has a tremendous impact on our community, our region, and our world. Read on to learn more about what we are doing inside and outside the classroom – and what it means to be part of such a special institution. As always, thank you for your partnership and for helping to propel CAS to new levels of greatness.

I hope you have a wonderful summer.
