Dr. Victor Malo-Juvera Honored

Professor of English Victor Malo-Juvera is one of 17 outstanding faculty members selected by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors to receive a 2023 Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Those selected represent all 16 of North Carolina’s public universities and the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Recipients were nominated by special committees at each institution and selected by the Board of Governors Committee on Educational Planning, Policies and Programs.

“It is an honor to recognize our faculty and the tremendous work they do in classrooms across the UNC System,” said UNC System President Peter Hans. “I offer my deepest thanks and congratulations to them.”

Professor Malo-Juvera joined UNCW in 2012. A former middle school teacher, he teaches courses in writing for secondary teachers, young adult literature and mythology. He leads a study abroad course that explores the intersections of classical myths and Harry Potter in London and Scotland. In addition to visiting Stonehenge, Bath, Durham Castle, and Old and New Towns of Edinburgh, they take in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in Soho and a Shakespeare play at the Globe Theater and ride the Hogwarts Express in the Scottish Highlands. "It's easily one of my favorite parts of my job," he said.

His previous honors include the Board of Trustees Teaching Excellence Award, Distinguished Teaching Professorship Award (2021); Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Award (2020); Distinguished Scholarly Engagement and Public Service Award – Junior Scholar (2016) and Discere Aude Award (2015).

“It is a huge honor to be recognized,” said Dr. Malo-Juvera. “We have many professors doing amazing work at UNCW and it’s humbling to be chosen from among them.”
