Nominations for UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame Open Until June 17

Monday, June 06, 2022

The nomination period for the 14th induction of the UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame, scheduled for the spring of 2023, remains open until June 17, 2022.

The UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame honors former student-athletes, coaches and administrators and longtime contributors. A total of 60 individuals have been honored since the select group was established in 1998, including the inaugural inductee, former coach and department founder William J. “Bill” Brooks.

Inductions are typically held every two years, but the Covid-19 pandemic forced a pause in the event. The Class of 2020 featured swimming and diving program founder Coach Dave Allen, longtime supporter Jim Ballantine, men’s basketball icon Brett Blizzard and women’s basketball standout Sharon McDowell.

According to the Hall of Fame’s criteria, candidates must make outstanding contributions during their association with the university. If a student-athlete, the individual must leave the university in good academic standing. If a teacher-coach or administrator, the candidate must hold that position for at least five years. Special consideration is given for significant contributions to society through community activities and performance in chosen fields that bring credit and distinction to the university.

Anyone may nominate a candidate to the Hall of Fame. Nomination forms are available on UNCWsports.com (PDF) or be obtained at the Athletic Communications Office in the Nixon Annex adjacent to Trask Coliseum.

Nominations must be submitted to Joe Browning, Chairman, UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame, UNCW, 601 S. College Road, Wilmington, NC, 28403. For more information, call 910.962.3236.
