Commencement 2022: Congratulations, Seahawks!

Saturday, May 14, 2022

UNCW held four ceremonies during its one-hundred-and-second commencement exercises May 13 and 14, graduating more than 2,750 students (2,079 undergraduate, 645 master’s and 26 doctoral). All ceremonies took place in Trask Coliseum and were accessible via livestream.

The ceremony schedule follows:

  • Friday, May 13:
1 p.m.: College of Arts and Sciences (Social Sciences, Creative Arts and Liberal Studies)
5 p.m.: College of Arts and Sciences (Sciences and Humanities)
  • Saturday, May 14:
9 a.m.: College of Health and Human Services
1 p.m.: Cameron School of Business and Watson College of Education

Peter Hans, President of the University of North Carolina System, delivered the commencement address at each ceremony. During his remarks, he advised the Class of 2022 to cultivate happiness.

"You’ll be a far better advocate, citizen, and friend — far more able to fight for the things that matter to you — if you can hold onto that gratitude, maintain perspective, and find contentment in your own life. Be a happy warrior. It will ripple forth to many others," he said. "If you ever doubt that happiness is a serious and worthwhile subject, consider this: The Declaration of Independence — one of the most important documents in the history of the written word — names just three foundational rights. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

UNCW Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli gave welcoming remarks and presided over the ceremonies. “The Class of 2022 will always hold an important place in my memories of this great university. You are the last class to graduate during my seven years as Chancellor. It is my honor to share this special celebration with you,” he wrote in the program letter. He is set to retire June 30.

Kendall Hart '22, Senior Class President, celebrated the Class of 2022's perseverance, noting they navigated hurricanes and a pandemic to reach their goals.

"As we move on to our next steps, it is important to thank those who helped us be successful Seahawks: our excellent faculty, our families, and of course our friends," Hart said. "I want to encourage everyone to hold onto these connections as you continue in your life as a forever Seahawk. Once again, congratulations, I am proud of all of us for making it here. It is time to go out and change the world."

Alison Baringer '04, Chair of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, closed out the ceremonies by welcoming the graduates to the UNCW Alumni Association. Resources for new grads are available here.

"Our powerful network cannot wait to help you foster new friendships, explore endless opportunities, and empower you to lead and serve your communities – and your alma mater. Your unique talents and voices have influenced who UNCW is today. We need those same talents and voices to continue to shape the university we will become," she said.
