UNCW Chancellor Search Committee Recommends Candidates to Board of Trustees

Thursday, March 10, 2022

The UNCW Chancellor Search Committee held a virtual meeting on Tuesday, March 8 to prepare a confidential list of three recommended candidates to submit to the Board of Trustees.

The committee initiated the meeting in open session, and Gidget Kidd '91, Chair of the UNCW Board of Trustees and Chancellor Search Committee, provided a recap of the committee’s activities. Her remarks follow:

We brought our committee together on November 1. During that meeting, UNC System President Peter Hans delivered the charge to our committee. President Hans asked that we identify three unranked candidates for his consideration as a successor to Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli, who will retire in June.

Our search committee immediately went to work to hear from all voices in our community. We have taken several steps to get constituent feedback:

  • Our subcommittee planned a multi-pronged approach to receive input from UNCW constituents as we recruit our next chancellor.
  • We held several in-person and two virtual forums to hear from our faculty, staff, community, alumni, graduate and undergraduate students. These listening sessions were hosted by search committee members and were very informative.
  • We created an online survey and received over 670 constituent responses.
  • We received feedback and nominations directly to our dedicated chancellor search email box.

The committee collaborated on the development of a leadership statement. This document described the university and details of the position. After the President reviewed and approved the leadership statement, our System Office staff began sourcing candidates on our behalf. The position was advertised in a wide variety of professional and business journals and diverse job search boards.

I am pleased to share that we have had tremendous interest in the UNCW chancellor position, and the candidate pool was extremely strong. We had over 90 applicants for the position.

The committee carefully reviewed the applications and advanced the most qualified individuals for further consideration. After initial interviews and campus visits, we are now to the point where we must make a determination about the slate to recommend to the Board of Trustees.

Following the chair’s remarks, the committee moved to closed session for its deliberations. Reconvening in open session, the committee approved a confidential slate of three recommended candidates.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Kidd thanked the committee members for their service.

“I am extremely proud of this committee,” she said, noting the collaboration, enthusiasm, effort, expertise, and time the members contributed to the search. “This meeting concludes the search committee’s formal role in this process. I hope you will be ambassadors to support our new chancellor, whomever is chosen.”
