UNCW’s research faculty were honored in a video that premiered via a Facebook watch party on Nov. 5. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, faculty researchers continue to grow UNCW’s research and innovation. Eight faculty members are new members of the Million Dollar Club, announced during the event.

The James F. Merritt Million Dollar Club is a university honor and recognition for faculty and staff who have received $1 million or more in external research funding. During his nearly 34-year tenure at UNCW, Merritt procured more than $14,000,000 in grant and contracts.

The 2021 inductees are:

  • Patrick Carroll, Center for Marine Science
  • Patrick Erwin, biology and marine biology
  • Mariel (Leah) Mayo, College of Health and Human Services Center for Health Communities
  • Heather McWhorter, Small Business Technology Development Center
  • Jeremy Morgan, chemistry and biochemistry
  • Blake Ushijima, biology and marine biology
  • Sridhar Varadarajan, chemistry and biochemistry

Computer science professor Ronald (Ron) Vetter reached the exclusive $5M Club. UNCW is publicly recognizing these individuals on electronic billboards around Wilmington throughout November.

“Our high-quality research output is advancing knowledge, solving problems and enhancing the economic and cultural vitality of our community,” said Associate Provost for Research and Innovation Stuart Borrett. “This is evidenced in the accolades, scholarly publications, discovery and innovation, creative works and sponsored projects. This is an exciting time for research at UNCW.”
