UNCW’s Pricope, Shaw on WILMA’s “Women to Watch” List

Monday, August 23, 2021

Each year, WILMA Magazine recognizes women making an impact on the community in the areas of arts, business, education, health, nonprofit/volunteer, public service and rising stars. UNCW Professor of Geography Narcisa Pricope and Assistant Dean for Student Success Sheri Shaw are among the 2021 “Women to Watch.” Both are nominated in the education category.

Pricope holds a Ph.D. in geography and environmental engineering from the University of Florida. Her areas of expertise include land systems and watershed science, remote sensing and GIS. She is UNCW’s principal investigator and project manager for a $5 million initiative with the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. She was the first recipient of the Distinguished Emerging African Scholar Award, presented by the American Association of Geographers Africa Specialty Group and is among the StarNews’Wilmington's 40 Under 40 Award” winners for 2021.

In addition to serving as the CHHS assistant dean for student success, Sheri Shaw was recently selected to serve as UNCW's interim bridge coordinator. Shaw was instrumental in developing successful bridge programs at Drexel University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Since joining UNCW, she has helped create spaces to support Black women in the areas of health, professional development and advocacy. She serves as the advisor to the Black Women Association on campus and hosts the podcast “Black Woman Working.” In 2019, Shaw was one of the YWCA Annual Women of Achievement Award winners in the category of education.

Finalists will be recognized and the winner for each category announced in October.
