Notice: Inclement Weather Expected Today

Thursday, March 18, 2021

The Wilmington area is expected to experience heavy rain, strong winds, lightning and hail between 4 and 11 p.m. today. Based on current projections, a tornado watch is likely to be issued. This does not mean a tornado is necessarily headed to the area; it means conditions are "favorable" for a tornado.

In the event of a tornado warning in the area, the UNCW Alert system will be utilized to activate on-campus sirens and to call and send text alerts to registered mobile phones. Be sure that your mobile phone remains charged and powered on at all times, especially overnight or during other periods when you are not likely to check your campus email. Stay up to date on conditions by monitoring local media reports and visiting the National Weather Service: Wilmington website.

In the event of a tornado warning involving the main campus, residential students are advised to move to an interior hallway or a room on the lowest floor of the building, avoid windows and take shelter beneath a desk or heavy furniture. Those who may be outside when the siren sounds are advised to seek shelter indoors immediately.

In the event heavy rains and strong winds affect Wilmington and surrounding areas, roadways may be temporarily flooded. Do not attempt to drive through standing water. Do not enter standing water on foot; there may be significant risks of infection or electrocution.

Thank you for the continued attention to your safety and that of your fellow Seahawks!
