UNCW Statement on Capitol Attack

Thursday, January 07, 2021

We, the leadership team of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, stand together to condemn the violence at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, and to express our deep commitment to the democratic principles defining our nation. The peaceful transfer of government; the right to freedom of speech, of the press, religion and assembly; protection from mob rule; and the many other democratic ideals outlined in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights inspire our academic institution’s mission, vision and values. As a campus community, we embrace our Seahawk Respect Compact, which “promote(s) the right of every person to participate in the free exchange of thoughts and opinions within a climate of civility and mutual respect.” The mob at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday (Jan. 6) assaulted these ideals and horrified the country and our university community. We stand with UNCW students, faculty and staff in our heartfelt commitment to the essential values that define and shape our country, our community and our campus. We will continue working together to protect and uplift these values now and in the future.
