UNCW Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli has been recognized as one of North Carolina's most influential leaders by Business North Carolina. The publication's 2020 Power 100 list features CEOs, entrepreneurs, thought leaders and institutional leaders from across the state.

Chancellor Sartarelli and N.C. State Chancellor Randy Woodson are the only UNC System chancellors appearing on the list. Wesley Burks, CEO of UNC Health Care, a UNC System affiliate, is also on the list. Leaders from Wake Forest University, Duke University and High Point University were also recognized by Business North Carolina.
Under Chancellor Sartarelli’s leadership, UNCW has expanded its research funding and has set record enrollment with nearly 17,500 students for the 2019-20 academic year, a 4.5 percent increase from the previous year. With 35 percent growth over the last decade, UNCW is the fastest-growing institution in the UNC System.

The university has also bolstered graduate programs, now offering doctoral programs in nursing practice, educational leadership, marine biology and psychology. To address a growing campus, Chancellor Sartarelli has overseen the more than $400 million in facility improvements, renovation projects and hurricane-recovery construction projects that are underway or planned over the next few years.
“It is very flattering to be among the prestigious names on this list,” commented Chancellor Sartarelli. “Although we work in a variety of fields, we share a common goal: To do our part to help enhance life for the people who live, work and learn in North Carolina. It is my great honor to serve as chancellor of this nationally recognized university, and I am proud to serve alongside the world-class faculty and staff on our campus."
UNCW’s efforts to advance research and scholarly activities earned the university the elevated designation of “Doctoral Universities: High Research Activity” institution from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education in 2018.  The university  ranks 92nd among Top Public National Universities, according to U.S. News & World Report, tying with Ohio University and the University of Houston.  It is the first time UNCW has been included in the national category since receiving the elevated designation of “Doctoral Universities: High Research Activity” institution. For the second consecutive year, the UNCW is ranked 8th on U.S. News & World Report’s list of 2020 Best Online Bachelor’s Programs.
Recipients named to the 2020 Power 100 were identified based on interviews with business community officials, research and reader suggestions.
