UNCW to Host ‘Wings up for Wilmington’ Service Day and Food Drive to Commemorate Hurricane Florence Anniversary

Tuesday, September 10, 2019

This Saturday, September 14, approximately 350 UNCW faculty, staff and students will be scattered across the Wilmington community offering their assistance and expertise to over a dozen local organizations. Volunteers will be doing everything from home repairs and watershed cleanup to bulk mailing and gardening.

Sponsored by the Center for Faculty Leadership, the event is spearheaded by Amanda Boomershine, associate professor in the Department of World Cultures and Languages; and Diana Ashe, director of the Center for Teaching Excellence and Faculty Leadership. Boomershine and Ashe began discussing doing something to commemorate Hurricane Florence this past spring and agreed a day of service seemed appropriate.

“Many faculty, staff and students were affected by Florence and/or helped with recovery efforts last fall,” said Boomershine. “Because of that connection, we wanted to do something that would allow all Seahawks to spend the day together helping those who help our community all year.”

In addition to the service opportunities, a weeklong food drive for NourishNC is taking place to feed hungry children in the community. Faculty, staff, students and members of the community are encouraged to drop off non-perishable food donations at any of the below UNCW locations through Sept. 13. The donation drive will run for the entire month of September at Campus Dining P.O.D. Markets. Items identified as high priority by NourishNC can be purchased at the market registers until Sept. 30.
