UNCW’s Posey Joins State Marine Fisheries Commission

Wednesday, July 31, 2019

Martin H. Posey, professor in the UNCW Department of Biology and Marine Biology, has been appointed by the governor’s office to serve on the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission for a three-year term.

The nine-member board is a rulemaking body tasked to manage, restore, cultivate and regulate marine and estuarine resources within its jurisdiction. The commission also implements laws related to coastal fisheries, fishing, shellfish and crustaceans.

“I greatly appreciate the support of Chancellor Sartarelli on this current appointment,” said Posey. “Service on the MFC helps meet strategic university goals of applying our expertise to address state issues. It will also provide insights into marine science needs and directions for North Carolina.”

Since joining UNCW in 1989, Posey has served as a professor, department chair, university accreditation coordinator, associate vice chancellor and dean of undergraduate studies and director of the Center for Marine Science.

Posey holds a bachelor’s degree in zoology from UNC Chapel Hill and a Ph.D. in biology from the University of Oregon. He is a past recipient of the UNCW Faculty Scholarship Award, UNCW Graduate Mentor Award and member of the university’s $10 Million Dollar Club for research funding.
