UNCW Again Selected for Inclusion in Highly Respected College Guidebook

Monday, July 15, 2019

UNCW has once again made the cut for the annual Fiske Guide to Colleges, a long-time authoritative resource of information for college-bound students.

The 2020 guide features more than 300 of the “best and most interesting” schools in the U.S., Canada, Great Britain and Ireland. UNCW has been routinely featured in the guide, including the 2019, 2018 and 2017 editions.

UNCW is extolled by the guide for its “extensive undergraduate research opportunities, a slate of solid sciences, and a close-knit community of like-minded individuals who like their modern academics mixed with a bit of old-fashioned Southern charm.”

The publication makes note of UNCW’s resiliency, stating, “After sustaining $140 million in damage caused by Hurricane Florence in 2018, UNCW is moving forward with a spate of new construction to add and enhance academic and residential facilities.”

It also praises the University Studies curriculum; Cornerstone Learning Communities; ETEAL (Experiencing Transformative Education through Applied Learning); and stellar programs in marine biology, chemistry, ecology, film studies and creative writing, among others.

“UNCW’s professors are very welcoming, encouraging and offer ample amounts of help,” the book quotes one Seahawk as saying.

UNCW is also one of only eight North Carolina institutions included on U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 list of Colleges with Great First-Year Experiences. Ensuring student success through quality education and experiences is a foundation of the university’s Strategic Plan.
