UNCW Presents to Open 27th Season with Famed Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble

The 27th season of UNCW Presents will open to the smooth sounds of jazz. The Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble will take to the stage of Kenan Auditorium as the performance season’s opening act on Thursday, Sept. 20.

Led by Arturo O'Farrill, son of Latin jazz musician, arranger and bandleader Chico O'Farrill, the ALJE is an octet of some of the most virtuosic musicians in Latin jazz today that honors the pioneers of its genre. Part of The Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, the ensemble has performed internationally to critical acclaim, playing at Havana’s Cubadisco Festival and Toronto’s Luminato Festival.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $25-75 and are available online or at the Kenan Box Office Monday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m.

Other performances slated for the 2018-19 UNCW Presents season include:

  • Oct. 18: Step Afrika, a dance company dedicated to the African-American tradition of “stepping”
  • Nov. 6: Theatre Re: The Nature of Forgetting 
  • Dec. 8: Homegrown Holiday with Zoe & Cloyd, veterans of the Asheville, NC music scene
  • Jan. 23: Jenny Scheinman’s Kannapolis: A Moving Portrait
  • Feb. 23: Dance Theatre of Harlem, a globally acclaimed dance institution
  • March 9: Theatreworks Presents: Magic School Bus
  • March 27: Silk Road Ensemble, Grammy Award-winning musical group
  • April 15: David Sedaris, humorist, comedian and author
  • April 25: Fred Hersch Ensemble: Leaves of Grass
