UNCW Featured in 2019 Fiske Guide to Colleges

Tuesday, July 10, 2018

UNCW has once again been featured in the Fiske Guide to Colleges, the most authoritative source of information for college-bound students and their parents. The guide features more than 300 of the “best and most interesting” schools in the U.S., Canada, Great Britain and Ireland. UNCW has routinely been featured in the guide, most recently in the 2018, 2017 and 2015 editions.

Compiled by former New York Times Education Editor Edward B. Fiske, the Fiske Guide has been a leading resource for over 35 years. Offering an insider’s look of each featured institution, the guide offers prospective students a unique glimpse into student life, available degree programs, campus climate, athletic opportunities and basic admission criteria. Inclusion is based primarily on academic excellence, a key priority of the university’s Strategic Plan

“Choosing a university is a difficult and important decision, and there are a number of factors students and parents have to consider,” said Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli. “The Fiske Guide presents college-bound students with a better idea of what life is really like on our campus and all of the wonderful things that make UNCW such a special place.”

UNCW’s entry showcases some of the specialized programming and opportunities available to students including the unique hands-on experiences afforded through the applied learning platform ETEAL, the advanced coursework of Honors College and the availability of grants and loan options for students from all backgrounds. Student anecdotes provide additional insight into the “real-life” identity of the university and give interested students a sneak peek as to what to expect if they choose to attend. Some entries include:

“I have loved my teachers. They are so hands-on.”

“We have our own little police force that has a base right on campus, so it’s very secure.”

“Everyone here always seems to be in a good mood and goes out of their way to speak to and help others.”

UNCW was also recently recognized by numerous rankings organizations. U.S. News & World Report ranked UNCW 6th among public universities and 14th in the South on its list of Best Regional Universities (South). The university was named a Best Southeastern School on The Princeton Review’s list of "2018 Best Colleges: Region by Region."
