UNCW’s Master of Education in Curriculum, Instruction and Supervision has received high praise recently, being ranked 10th nationally and 1st among North Carolina universities on the website Top Master’s in Education, while the career website Zippia rates UNCW 3rd on its list of “5 Best Colleges for Music Majors in North Carolina.”

The CIS master’s program, which is offered entirely online, prepares graduates to lead the development of curriculum and instructional programs at the school or district level. In identifying programs to recognize, Top Master’s in Education considered accreditation, student experiences, relevant coursework, student teaching experience, affordability and graduation rates, as well as information from government and rating organizations.

“Our CIS program prepares outstanding educational mentors, coaches and leaders,” said Van Dempsey, dean of the Watson College of Education. “It is a pleasure and well-deserved honor to have our outstanding students and faculty and the strength of our program acknowledged.”

Zippia rated universities in terms of which offered the best music programs and career opportunities for graduates, taking into account mean earnings and employment data; the percentage of the graduating class that are music majors; and general academic factors including admissions selectivity, graduation rate, cost and student debt.

“Our small class sizes afford us the opportunity to work and interact closely with each student, providing them with applied learning skills that prepare them to be productive in the job market upon graduation,” said music Chair Frank Bongiorno.

The Department of Music offers degrees in music education, jazz, performance (instrumental, piano and vocal), music technology and entrepreneurship, and general music studies.

UNCW’s Strategic Plan emphasizes academic programs that are accessible to both traditional and nontraditional students and that prepare graduates to compete for jobs in their field. These latest recognitions join an ever-growing list of rankings for the university.
