Cyber Defense Team to Make Fifth Appearance in Regional Competition

Tuesday, April 04, 2017

The UNCW Cyber Defense Club is one of eight teams competing in the 2017 Southeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition at Kennesaw State University April 5-6.

The annual competition brings college teams together to test students’ knowledge of cyber security issues. This year’s event is the largest to date with teams competing in a virtual qualifier to advance to the on-site regionals. The winner will represent the Southeast region at the National CCDC in San Antonio in late April.

The UNCW club was founded in 2011 and helps prepares members for careers in the field of cyber security. They have qualified for the regional competition five out of the past six years.

Preparing students for post-graduation success and increasing post-graduation career placement is a major initiative of the current UNCW Strategic Plan.

Jeff Cummings, assistant professor of information systems and Gordon Hurlbert Faculty Fellow, has served as the club’s faculty advisor for the past two years.

“This is a great opportunity for students to learn the challenges of cyber security and how to balance security and normal business operations,” he said. “The team has worked hard all year to compete at this level.”
