Center for Marine Science to Hold Open House and Information Carnival on Oct. 1
Monday, September 26, 2016
The UNCW Center for Marine Science will host an open house and Outdoor Science Carnival from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at the CREST campus on Masonboro Sound. Guided tours of the center and the CREST campus will be offered, as well as activities and demonstrations for children and adults.
“UNCW and CMS are integral to southeastern North Carolina and the coastal community,” said CMS Director Martin Posey. “We want the public to learn more about what we do, about our ongoing projects and how we are contributing to the region.”
More than 20 booths will feature interactive demonstrations involving research and educational programs such as MarineQuest as part of the Science Carnival. Two-hour tours of CMS, the Shellfish Research Hatchery and the MARBIONC marine biotechnology facility begin at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. Tour slots are limited, and registration is available via the open house website.
Among the tour stops are the oceanography lab, including a remote-instrument demonstration, the shellfish labs and other research laboratories. In addition to the guided tour, the new interactive virtual tour of CMS will run continually on a screen in the lobby of the facility. The virtual tour also can be viewed online at any time.
The Center for Marine Science is at 5600 Marvin Moss Lane, off Masonboro Loop Road. Limited onsite parking is available. Additional parking and shuttle service will be available at The Home Depot Garden Center at Monkey Junction.
