UNCW Among Nation’s Best Colleges for Surfers
Friday, May 20, 2016
As North Carolina’s coastal university, it is no surprise UNC Wilmington ranks among the nation’s best colleges for surfers, according to StartClass.
UNCW claimed 13th place, ranking ahead of universities in California, Hawaii, New Jersey, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Texas. All 10 of the top-ranked colleges for surfers are located in California. The education research website compiled its rankings with inspiration from Surfer Magazine and Surfline.
UNCW students have two campus organizations, the Surf Club and the Surfrider Foundation, dedicated to enjoying the sport of surfing and to protecting the ocean and coastal environments.
The UNCW Department of History teaches a course about the history of surfing, tracing the cultural, technological and economic aspects of its transformation from a Polynesian folkway to a global multi-billion dollar economic force. During the spring semester, the Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography offered a new course about the physics of surfing.
