Kelly S. King Launches Chancellor’s Distinguished Lecture Series
Monday, March 07, 2016
The Chancellor’s Distinguished Lecture Series opened March 3 with “Perspectives on Leadership” from Kelly S. King, chairman and chief executive officer of BB&T Corp. An enthusiastic crowd of hundreds greeted King, who spoke at the Burney Center.
UNCW Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli introduced King at the lecture, one of the events being held in advance of the chancellor’s March 31 installation. He said King’s appearance continues a strong community partnership between the university and BB&T.
“Many BB&T employees have been involved on our campus as student mentors through the Cameron Executive Network, and they support UNCW as volunteers and donors through the Seahawk Club,” Sartarelli said. “The company’s commitment also includes generous support of important projects and endowments at UNCW.”
King, who was named president and CEO in 2009 and chairman a year later, is credited with shepherding BB&T to profitability and financial stability even during the difficult economic climate following the 2008 recession. American Banker named King the 2015 Banker of the Year for his leadership during that challenging time.
The lecture series is designed to connect students and the university community with leaders who offer insight on topics related to values, strong leadership skills and the benefits of hard work. The series will feature executives, government officials, academic professionals and nationally recognized speakers.
The next lecture will be announced in the coming weeks.
