In partnership with the National Weather Service and local state agencies, UNCW continues to closely monitor Hurricane Joaquin and the concurrent rain system. Based on the latest information available, UNCW officials have determined that the main campus and Onslow Extension Site will remain open and fully operational, with all classes and events proceeding on schedule.

Given the possibility of heavy rains, hazardous roads (more hazardous after dark), and potential flood conditions, students are advised to avoid unnecessary travel until the storm has passed, and exercise caution when moving about campus, with particular awareness of flooded areas, detours and debris. As always, students who do not feel comfortable traveling to or from classes should use their best judgment.

The area is under a flood warning until 10:45 a.m. today and is expected to receive 8-10 inches of heavy rain between today and Monday. Travel conditions during that period, and possibly longer based on the future path of the storm, will be hazardous. Students and employees are discouraged from embarking on any unnecessary travel. Surf conditions are and will continue to be extremely dangerous; authorities are urging people to stay out of the water.‎

As of 8 a.m. on Friday, the Adverse Weather Policy is in effect for faculty and staff: Employees should contact their managers with any questions or concerns.

All campus services, including dining locations, Randall Library, and the Student Rec Center, are operating on their usual schedules. However, students should check for updates before departing for campus locations, as hours of operation could change as conditions warrant.

Students and employees are encouraged to call 911 with any emergencies.

While all events are proceeding as scheduled, patrons should check individual event websites for potential changes or cancellations. For the latest UNCW Athletics schedules, please visit

As the campus continues to respond to adverse weather conditions, we request that students, parents and family members refrain from calling UNCW offices so university employees can focus time and resources on obtaining and disseminating the latest information.

Please continue to monitor the university’s homepageUNCW AlertFacebook and Twitter pages, or call the Emergency Information Hotline at 910.962.3991 or 888.657.5751; updates will appear via those channels if there is a change in status or conditions.

Although there is no expectation of a dramatic change from the above conditions, another message will be distributed/posted via email, the website and social media by 5 p.m. today.

Please check for any updates. Thank you for your continued attention to these messages.
