Candace Thompson Named Interim Director of the Upperman African American Cultural Center

Candace Thompson has been named interim director of the Upperman African American Cultural Center.Dr. Thompson is an associate professor in UNCW's Watson College of Education. She earned her Ph.D. in the social foundations of education from the University of South Carolina in 2008. Dr. Thompson’s research interests include youth empowerment, culturally responsive education, and educating for critical cultural consciousness through school and community-based collaborations.
The Upperman African American Cultural Center is part of UNCW's Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Throughout 2015, the Upperman Center will be celebrating its 20th anniversary of carrying out its vision: “to positively affect the recruitment, retention and academic achievement of black students at UNCW, and contribute to the preparation of all UNCW students to excel in an increasingly diverse world.”
