UNCW Cyber Defense Club to Compete in Regional Competition

Thursday, April 02, 2015

The UNCW Cyber Defense Club has been invited to attend the Southeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition due to their excellent performance at the Southeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Qualification Competition in March. Only the top eight teams in the southeastern region are invited to participate in the competition taking place April 7-8 at Kennesaw State University.

All teams will have to demonstrate their knowledge and skills of defending cyber threats and protecting networks through a series of trials. The winner of the on-site regional competition will move on to compete at the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition in San Antonio in late April.

UNCW students Brandon Elliot, Ciara Reolegio, Scott Hollenbeck, Steve Myrick, Chris Creech, James Barasorda, Jack Attick, Calandra Toothman and Lofton Anderson are the current team members. Competitions provide the opportunity to apply the theory and skills that they have acquired.

Ulku Clark, associate professor of management information systems, serves as faculty advisor to the club. “The members of the cyber defense team relentlessly prepared to represent UNCW at the regionals,” she said. “No matter what the outcome is, this experience has been a great tool to improve their cyber defense and team work skills. The last time we participated in the regionals UNCW got the second place award. The Cyber Defense Team will do their best to bring another award this year.”
