UNCW Provost Denise Battles to Serve as President of SUNY Geneseo

Tuesday, January 13, 2015

The State University of New York at Geneseo announced today that the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York has approved the appointment of UNCW Provost Denise Battles as the next President of SUNY Geneseo.

Battles has served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UNCW since 2012. Previously, she was the founding dean of the College of Natural and Health Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado.

“I am both honored and humbled to have been chosen for this position, even as I am torn by the prospect of leaving my UNCW colleagues and the greater Wilmington community,” said Battles. “While at the institution, I have been privileged to work with a remarkable set of colleagues, and I am very proud of the work we have accomplished together‎.”

Under her leadership, Battles has overseen the growth of various academic programs, including the SACS reaffirmation of accreditation, the development and implementation of ETEAL and its applied learning strategies, the establishment of the Office of Undergraduate Studies and review and progress of the UNCW mission statement update.

“Although this is a tremendous loss for UNCW, I am supportive of Denise's decision,” said UNCW Chancellor Bill Sederburg. “I know this is an excellent opportunity for her at a premier liberal arts college, and in her hometown region of Upstate New York, no less.”

Battles will remain at UNCW through the spring semester. Plans for an interim appointment and search for a permanent provost will be announced at a later time.
