UNCW, City of Wilmington, Community Volunteers Plant Trees

Tuesday, October 14, 2014

On Tuesday, Oct. 21, UNCW, the City of Wilmington and members of the Cape Fear Garden Club planted five trees at the corner of Rose Avenue and Riegel Road as part of the city's 275th anniversary celebration. They installed the first of 275 native flowering ornamental trees that will be placed along the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail.

Marcia Doering, a certified arborist and UNCW crew leader, coordinated the event with representatives from the Cape Fear Garden Club, the Wilmington Tree Commission and the 275th Anniversary Committee.

The five trees planted during the ceremony were donated by Lowe’s Home Improvement Store. Members of the Cape Fear Garden Club have donated funds to purchase another 270 seedling trees, which will be planted at a later time.
