Get stoked for a "swell" week of learning the science behind surfing while you rip it up on the big blue ocean with MarineQuest's dynamic program Surf-n-Science Groms. This week long surfing intensive program has paired surfing with marine science to provide young marine enthusiasts the opportunity to develop surfing skills while gaining a real education in modern marine science. Learn how marine science has inspired the way surfing has developed into the amazing sport it is today. Explore ocean physics and board design, create your own surf art project, and compete in a MarineQuest beginners surfing contest. Familiarize yourself with surfing and paddleboarding equipment, techniques, and safety while gaining the skills needed to become a lifelong surfer. You will leave Surf-n-Science Groms with a surfer's tan, a scientist's brain, and a smile on your face!

Field excursions include:

  • Surfing at Carolina Beach, coastal habitat exploration at Wrightsville Beach and Kure Beach

Highlights include:

  • Daily surfing lessons; experience paddle boarding; interaction with surfing professionals; beach trips; beginners surfing contest; discussions on coastal/shoreline issues, ocean chemistry, marine life; surf art project; and more…
