Attitudes about Sea Level Rise

Student open-ended prompt: If the sea level rises, will it affect you? How?

Students from both Cape Fear Middle School in Pender County and Murray Middle School in New Hanover County showed similar distributions in their answers on the pre-assessment when asked if sea level rise (SLR) would affect them. Any differences in the distribution of yes / no responses was not statistically significant at the p=.05 level.

When responding to how sea level rise would affect them, student answers included three major themes: Proximity (distance to the beach and ocean), Personal Impact (change in recreation, use of the beach, property loss), and Physical Impact (flooding, loss of land). These themes were used to support student answers; both those that thought sea level rise would affect them and those that did not. The students at Murray MS listed a personal impact more frequently than the students at Cape Fear. Since students' answers were not limited, many responses included more than one category. The proportion of responses that mentioned each theme is listed on the graphs. However, in order to accurately compare frequency, the proportions have been scaled so their totals equal one. Section sizes in the pie chart reflect this scaling.
