FYSA in the UK Overview Heading Banner

Location Overview

Study abroad in the United Kingdom this fall with UNCW! FYSA students can spend their fall semester in Bangor, Wales, United Kingdom (UK) completing courses to earn credit toward their UNCW graduation requirements.

Founded in 1884, Bangor University is one of the oldest and most prestigious degree awarding institutions in the UK. The university is in the heart of the city and its buildings are scattered around, but all identifiable with their red Bangor logos on the signs. The university is a beautiful blend of 18th century architecture with modern student resources and tools. The campus is very pedestrian friendly, with sidewalks leading in every direction.

The city of Bangor is situated on the coast of Northwest Wales and is easy to reach from any part of the UK. Manchester International Airport is only a two-hour train journey away, and London is less than four hours away by train. Bangor is classified as a “city” since there is a Cathedral in town. There are around 20,000 people in Bangor, in addition to the 10,000+ students enrolled at Bangor University, so the city feels more like a comfortable size town with everything in walking distance. Its residents describe Bangor as a “college town where the mountains meet the sea.”

Bangor is situated between the Menai Strait, which flows off the Irish Sea, and the Snowdonia National Park. Snowdonia is the highest mountain in England and Wales and the second highest in the United Kingdom. The Snowdonia Mountains are great for hiking, climbing and even camping. While exploring the mountains you will see the many sheep farms and remnants of the old slate mines carved out of the side of the mountain. The zip lines that cross over the old slate mines are also a popular attraction. On the Sea side of the city, bird watching, sea cliff climbing, and wind surfing are popular activities.
