Writers' Week 2021

Friday, November 05

The UNCW Department of Creative Writing’s annual celebration of the written word continues with the 2021 Writers’ Week Nov. 1-5. Each year, authors, editors, students, faculty and the community join in discussions of literary craft and current issues of the profession.

The keynote address "Nikole Hannah-Jones in Conversation with John Jeremiah Sullivan” will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 2 in Kenan Auditorium and be livestreamed via Zoom. Hannah-Jones is one of Time Magazine’s most Influential People of 2021. Co-sponsored by creative writing and the Office of the Arts, her visit coincides with the commemoration of the 123rd anniversary of the 1898 Wilmington Massacre.

Sandra Cisneros, author of The House on Mango Street, will participate in a panel discussion at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 4 (virtual attendance available as well) that explores the author’s literary choices and life experiences. The event is part of the NEA Big Read Cape Fear.

Readings, panels and most events are free and open to all. Participants can join in guided writing exercises led by faculty members each morning to start the day with creativity. The full schedule, speaker bios and link to preregister (required for online security) are available at
