Admission Process: MSN Family Nurse Practitioner

The following information pertains to the completion of the UNCW Graduate Application for the Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner (MSN-FNP). As detailed in the current issue of the UNCW Graduate Catalogue, the Graduate School at the University of North Carolina Wilmington will administer applications for the program of study leading to the Master of Science in Nursing degree.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to see that all supporting documentation is received in the Graduate School. Applicants are encouraged to check the progress of their application file. Please contact the Graduate School regarding the progress of your application. Failure to observe this procedure will delay processing of applications.

  • An application will not be reviewed until it is complete.
  • When required materials are received, the applicant’s file is sent to the school of nursing admissions committee for review and recommendation.

The school or department recommendation is then acted upon by the Graduate School.

Official Transcripts

Official transcripts of all college work, both undergraduate and graduate, must be sent directly from each institution to The Graduate School, UNCW, 601 South College Road, Wilmington, NC 28403-5955. Transcripts can be requested and sent prior to application submission.


Three recommendations from individuals who can address the applicant’s potential for successfully completing the Master’s degree are required. It is strongly recommended that at least one recommendation be from a former nursing faculty member, and one recommendation be from a current or former employer. Prior to application, one should consult with professionals from whom the required references will be sought. When completing the online application, you will be prompted to submit email addresses for your proposed references. The Graduate School will automatically generate an email request to those references asking them to submit an online recommendation.


Professional Resume or CV

All applicants must provide a current curriculum vita/resume, in a format to indicate the following (Attach to the online application):

  1. Formal education.
  2. Students entering the Master of Science in Nursing degree must have successfully completed the following undergraduate courses:
    1. Health and Physical Assessment
    2. Community Health,
    3. Statistics
    4. Nursing research
      1. Please include the following course information from the above courses on the submitted resume: the course title, where the course was taken, and the grade received in the course.
  3. Professional experience, describing its clinical and/or administrative characteristics.
  4. Any/all continuing education you have completed.
  5. Any/all honors, awards, and/or certifications you have received.
  6. Any/all community/regional activities in which you are involved/participate.
  7. Volunteer activities—briefly describe, if applicable.
  8. Publications—if applicable.
  9. Research—if applicable.
  10. Organizational leadership—briefly describe; if applicable.
  11. Memberships—briefly describe; if applicable.

(Please be as specific and detailed as possible, listing information in reverse chronological order.)

Notification of Acceptance

Applications completed online by March 1 will receive first consideration for the following fall semester admission. Applications submitted by March 1, but considered incomplete, will be reviewed on a space-available basis as they become complete. Admission decisions are based on several factors, including a strong overall undergraduate academic record; however, other indicators of success may be considered for admission. Admission decisions will be finalized and students will be notified of admission no later than the end of May.

Special Requirements

Once admitted to the School of Nursing, the following Special Health Requirements must be completed prior to the beginning of the fall semester. Students will not be allowed to begin classes until these required credentials are completed:

  1. Hepatitis B immunization (or signed declination)
  2. Varicella immunization (or proof of immunity)
  3. TB skin test
  4. Drug Screen
  5. Current CPR
  6. Liability Insurance (included in tuition and fees)
  7. Criminal Background Check
  8. Health Insurance and any other requirement stipulated by clinical agencies or university
