Brandy MechlingIn 2006, Dr. Brandy Mechling began working at UNCW as a lecturer, and in 2013 was promoted to assistant professor. Prior to teaching, Mechling was a nurse in pediatrics and community health. She earned her BSN in nursing with a minor in psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a MSN from Hampton University, and her PhD from UNC Chapel Hill.

Mechling is an active researcher, with several publications currently under review . Her research is focused on mental health nursing, with publications in with journals such as Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurse's Association and Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services. Mechling was honored by the NAMI WIlmington Chapter for her  "Recognition for Commitment to Serving Individuals and Families with Mental Illness" in May 2017.

Research Interest(s)

  • Ambiguous loss in family members of the mentally ill
  • Outcomes for young adults who grow up with a mentally ill parent in the home
  • Young caregiving in children and adolescents of mentally Ill parents
  • The experience for children growing up with a depressed mother or father; buffers to the experience; risk and resiliency factors
