June 26, 2020: The following statement was prepared by the HAHS Program Coordinators with assistance from some faculty members and representatives of our Black student community.

The School of Health and Applied Human Sciences Leadership Team stands against the repugnant rhetoric of racism, bigotry, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, ageism, misogyny, and religious intolerance and actively affirms that Black lives matter.  We denounce any and all racist activity by faculty, staff, or students that serves to intimidate, harass, or suppress diversity. We are committed to ensuring that our actions and policies reflect the values of the Seahawk Respect Compact of actively fostering, encouraging, and promoting inclusiveness, mutual respect, acceptance, and open-mindedness among students, faculty, staff and the communities we serve.

We acknowledge that we can always do more and we pledge to find additional ways to embody our school’s values of diversity, inclusion, and social justice so that all our students feel safe, validated, and valued. Beginning immediately, we will focus on how we can do better on our strategic goals related to diversity and inclusion including, but not limited to, Goal 1.3 “Attract and retain high-quality and diverse students, faculty, and staff.” We will also analyze our degree programs and outreach projects to seek opportunities to infuse inclusion and diversity initiatives to better prepare our students to become critically thinking citizens who will advance change in our disciplines and society.

There can be no equity for anyone until there is equity for everyone. We commit to working towards eliminating inequality in our communities and we join the call for justice.
