Yoko Kano Awarded Southeastern Association of Teachers of Japanese Teacher of the Year Award

FEBRUARY 28, 2020

Yoko Kano, senior lecturer in the Department of World Languages and Cultures, is the recipient of the 2020 Southeastern Association of Teachers of Japanese (SEATJ) Teacher of the Year Award. The award honors educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching and exemplary dedication to Japanese language education. Kano received the award at the SEATJ annual conference on February 22.

“I am honored to receive this prestigious award,” said Kano. “My passion comes from my love of working with my students in their challenge to learn Japanese, one of the most difficult languages for English natives. I admire their courage, effort and dedication, so I work hard as well.”

Kano serves as the director of the Foreign Language Resource Center, the North Carolina Teaching Asia Network and the Japan Center-Coastal Chapter. She received UNCW’s Lecturer of the Year Award in 2009.
