Are You The Missing Piece of the Puzzle?

Imagine for a moment that you are a recruiter or an employer for the company you wish to work for one day. When you recieve a cover letter from a prospective candidate for a role within your organization what are you hoping to find? Something generic that clearly indicates that your company's name and the name of the position were simply plugged into a cover letter used to apply to 50 other jobs, or something that tells you that the candidate knows about your organization, is excited about the position, and has the qualifications to add value to your team?

The answer here seems like a no brainer, but using something that works as a one size fits all option is so simple. This is why so many students applying for jobs fall into this trap. It may take a bit more time and effort to truly customize each cover letter and research the organizations, but the pay off will most certainly be worth the work. Let your future employer know that you are the perfect fit...the missing piece of the company puzzle!

Some things to consider when writing a cover letter to accompany your resume and application:

  • Unless the instructions explicitly state that you shouldn't, always include a cover letter
  • Do your homework: Take a look at the company's website and learn about their mission and vision as well as the organizational culture; reference your research in the first paragraph and explain how your values and professional passions align with what they are doing
  • Express genuine excitement and interest in the role and be specific about what exictes you based on the job description
  • Avoid using phrases like "your company" or "this role"; include the full company name and position throughout
  • Use the second paragraph of your cover letter to share about yourself and what skills and experiences make you uniquely qualified for the position
  • Be sure to let the readers know what is in it for them; talk about your desire to leverage your skills to contribute meaningfully to their organization
  • Proofread very carefully, typos will negatively impact the reader's first impression
