Luc Marelli
The current exhibition features paintings completed over the course of two stays in 2002 and 2017 at the No Boundaries International Art Colony on Bald Head Island, NC.

Luc Marelli’s work produced on Bald Head Island exists between gesture and perceived nature, working on his subjects within the Art Colony as much as outside on the dunes of the beach. The artist meditates on the motif of sunshine as it weaves its way through the natural world in an explosive show of color.  He started work on the subject in 2002 in Drops of Sunshine II, then again in 2017 with Drops of Sun III and IV all done on Bald Head Island. He later continued work on this subject in a series produced in the forests of Finland in 2018.  In his paintings entitled Lines of Color I, II and IV we discover the artist’s gesture, his interpretation of the line within abstract work that hints at the vibrational lines found in nature and within the sea surrounding the island.

Born in 1958, in Athenaz, Switzerland, the artist trained in lithography on stone at the atelier Karl Imhof in Munich, Germany (1977-78). Marelli spent time at the Kunstakademie, in Munich, Germany (1978) and received a diploma in painting and engraving from the Ecole Supérieure d’Art Visuel in Geneva, Switzerland in 1981, as well as working at the Institut Supérieur de Peinture, Van der Kelen in Brussels, Belgium.

He has lived in Berlin, Rome, Boissang, Belgium and since 1992, resides between Geneva, Switzerland and Flagy, France. His work can be found in private collections in the United States, Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, and Turkey with works part of the collections of Banque Cantrade Zurich, Fonds d'art contemporain de la ville de Genève ; Fonds d'art contemporain du canton de Genève; cabinet d'art graphique du canton de Genève; Ville de Lancy ; Cabinet des estampes du musée Jenisch, Vevey; Banque du Gothard, Lugano; Schweizer Landes bibliothek, Zurich; Schweizer Volksbank, Bern.

No Boundaries International Art Colony, Bald Head Island
In May 1998 No Boundaries, Inc. was founded by Pam Toll, Gayle Tustin, and Dick Roberts for the purpose of bringing artists from around the world together to enlighten each other and the larger community through sharing art, culture, and ideas. One of the early key patrons of the colony was Bald Head Island Limited managed by Kent Mitchell who generously donated housing, studio space and transportation for the project, and in 2004 began to subsidize publishing the catalog. Bald Head Island is an essential piece of the whole experience, and influences the work made by ‘plein air’ painters and non-representational artists alike.
