Degrees and Programs

The UNCW Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a wide range of career tracks. Where will your degree take you?

Some of the MS Math graduates have gone on to earn a PhD in mathematics, statistics or a related field. Other graduates go directly into their careers. College teaching is one career choice of our graduates, while others have obtained positions in a variety of areas including business and finance, pharmaceuticals and biomedical development, health care and engineering.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers:

  • A Master of Science degree
  • A combined undergraduate/graduate program that enables a student to complete both degrees in a five year period. In this program a student can count up to 12 credit hours toward satisfying requirements for both the BA or BS and the MS in Mathematics
  • Financial for the M.S. degree, including teaching assistantships and part-time teaching positions, scholarships and out-of-state tuition remissions
  • Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Applied Statistics
  • MS in Data Science (a joint program with the Department of Computer Science)

If you have a bachelor's degree (or are about to obtain one) in mathematics or a related field and are interested in a master's degree in mathematics, please consider applying to UNCW.

Admission Requirements

You can apply for admission at any time. We act upon applications as soon as they are complete. Applicants are required to submit the following to the Graduate School:

  1. An application for graduate admission.
  2. Official transcripts of all college work (undergraduate and graduate).
  3. Official scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) aptitude test. It is not necessary to take the advanced test in mathematics. However, you are encouraged to do so. Scores more than five years old will not be accepted.
  4. Three recommendations from individuals in professionally relevant fields.

Each applicant also must:

  • Have a strong overall academic record
  • Have passed, with a "B" or better average, the following undergraduate mathematics courses: an introductory calculus sequence including multivariate calculus, a course in linear algebra and at least 15 additional semester hours of mathematics or statistics courses beyond the level of calculus.

Individuals who fall below the established criterion in one of the areas may be considered for provisional admission. Please apply by April 15 but no later than June 15 for fall or summer admission (by April 1 for full consideration if you are applying for a Teaching Assistantship) and by November 30 for spring admission.
