Mark W. Lanier serves as assistant to the chancellor and assistant secretary to the UNCW Board of Trustees, with primary responsibilities in governmental relations, board affairs and economic development.
Educated in the public schools of North Carolina, at Duke University, Appalachian State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he has been employed as assistant to the president/lecturer in political science at Hampden-Sydney College, assistant secretary to the University of North Carolina Board of Governors and as a board, policy and public affairs consultant, ranging from early childhood through graduate education and economic development.
At UNCW, he serves as a member of the senior leadership team, as a director and officer of the UNCW Research Foundation and other associated entities, and on numerous campus councils and committees.
His current external professional activities include service for the National Association of Presidential Assistants in Higher Education, APLU Council on Governmental Affairs, Cape Fear Workforce Development Board, Wilmington International Airport (ILM), and in various roles with state and local economic development organizations. He is UNCW’s representative on the UNC State Relations Council, UNC Federal Relations Council, and UNC Economic Transformation Council for the University of North Carolina system office.
