Memorial Day is a holiday designed to give Americans the time to reflect upon and honor the sacrifices of those who gave their lives through military service.
In a time when many Americans hold no personal connections to the military, the community of UNCW, with more than 2,100 military-affiliated students, faculty and staff, recognizes the somberness of the occasion. Founded as an institution to provide educational opportunities for veterans following World War II, UNCW is dedicated to supporting veterans and their families.
On Friday, UNCW’s Office of Military Affairs will erect flags along College Road to honor our fallen military services members. The flags will be on display throughout the Memorial Day holiday.
Memorial Day is, however, a remembrance; we take this time to commemorate the faithful dedication of the few who gave their lives for the many and to aspire to similar levels of courage and generosity in our own lives.
