Community Programming

In an effort to bridge the gap between the campus and community, the UNCW Office of Cultural Arts encourages community engagment through its Artist in Residence Program (see below). These events provide audiences of all ages an opportunity to engage directly with artists and broaden their understanding of the arts through a range of programs, including free performances; community workshops; master classes; community/artist collaborations; Meet-the-Artist receptions; Q&A's and open rehearsals.

Over the years, campus and community members have learned to dance Salsa with LA-based company Contra-Tiempo (photo above); created new works with members of Pilobolus; attended open rehearsals for Carolina Ballet; performed alongside bluegrass masters from the Del McCoury Band; mastered new techniques under the expert instruction of Jazz at Lincoln Center and Preservation Hall Jazz Band and participated in workshops with New York stage director Christopher McElroen to develop the critically acclaimed World Premiere Stage Adaptation of Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man.

Artist in Residence Program

UNCW's Artist in Residence Program is a unique initiative that provides artists an opportunity to collaborate with the campus and community to create and perform new works, while providing audiences an opportunity to broaden their understanding of the arts and creative process. Residencies last from one week to one month and are customized to the needs of both the artist and community. In addition to providing artists time to rehearse and develop new works, residencies provide multiple opportunities for the public to meet and/or work with the artists before attending a culminating performance or staged reading.

Invisible Man Residency (Fall 2011)

I formed a strong contact with the director, met people from the community who have an interest in the arts, collaborated with other UNCW students (most of whom I’m very close friends with today) and learned about the process and importance of putting on a staged reading, a very advantageous step when creating a play." - Alexis Strobin, UNCW Student

Contra-Tiempo Residency (Fall 2010)
