UNCW Economic Outlook Conference to Focus on Marine Biotechnology

Wilmington, N.C. - The University of North Carolina Wilmington's ninth annual Economic Outlook Conference will be held from 7:30 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, Oct. 9 in the Burney Center on the UNCW campus.

Following the conference, participants have the option to tour the Center for Marine Science facility. Media are welcome to attend and cover the event and tour; speakers will be available for interviews.

The conference is open to the public. Tickets are $30 per person, which includes the tour. Attendees are responsible for their own transportation to the Center for Marine Science.

This year's industry sector focus is marine biotechnology. Considered a high-growth industry, a marine biotech hub could provide impressive opportunities in employment, sales and real estate.

The event's keynote speaker is Deborah Mosca, CEO of the Wilmington-based Marine Bio-Technologies Center of Innovation. She will discuss the potential for marine biotech research and commercialization to become the next growth industry for the region.

A panel of industry experts, who will discuss the impact of marine biotechnology on the regional economy, includes:


UNCW Cameron School of Business faculty Thomas Simpson and Woody Hall will provide national and regional forecasts. The event will close with a real estate panel. Comprised of industry leaders, the panel will discuss the trends in the local commercial and residential markets.
