Writers often find that their words are inspired by beautiful places. If you have ever dreamed of writing, come spend three days living on prestigious Bald Head Island and hiking the pristine maritime forest, while working with some of the best writers and writing teachers in the country. Featuring a talk by North Carolina legend Clyde Edgerton and classes by acclaimed authors Lavonne Adams, Karen Bender, David Gessner, Rebecca Lee, and environmentalist Anthony Snider, the Bald Head Island Creative Writing Retreat features an intense weekend of writing workshops, craft classes, social events, and tours of the nearby maritime forest and salt marshes. Each day features three hour-long classes and scheduled events, but plenty of time is also left open for just strolling the beach, allowing developing writers to get away from the world and focus intensely on their developing craft.
The Creative Writing Retreat will kick-off Friday afternoon with a welcome barbecue and will conclude Sunday after the morning workshops (please see the brochure for a more detailed schedule). The cost of the Retreat, including meals, classes, and lectures, is $400 for early registration through February 29th. Housing (not included in tuition) ranges from dormitory-style at the Bald Head Island Conservancy to island rentals, for both groups and individuals, at a 15% discount. The Bald Head Island Creative Writing Retreat is a collaborative endeavor between the UNCW Creative Writing Department, Bald Head Island Limited, The Bald Head Island Conservancy, and the NC Coastal Reserve.
