Origin of Our Logo
The west african adinkra symbol known as sankofa is most often depicted as a bird, looking back over its shoulder. The meaning is that you must know and respect your past in order to successfully move forward. The Upperman African American Cultural Center has adapted the pose of the sankofa bird to our beloved seahawk - symbolizing reflection and knowledge of the past, and forward progress to excellence to our UNCW family. |
