What are the Pros and Cons of Withdrawing from a course?
You should make every effort to get help in a course before withdrawing. Talk with your professor and seek additional help from such University resources as The Learning Center, The Math lab and The Writing Center. If you withdraw before the deadline (remember to check the Academic Calendar EACH semester), you will receive a "W" in the course which will not affect your grade point average. However, courses for which you receive a "W" do count as attempted hours. The number of attempted hours is important for determining financial aid eligibility. In addition, students who withdraw need to consider when to make up the hours in order to stay on track for a timely graduation. Before withdrawing, students should consider all the implications, including whether doing so will drop them below full time status, whether it will negatively impact any financial aid/scholarships/insurance, and how it will impact plans for graduation. Students are urged to discuss the decision with their academic advisor and their financial aid counselor (if applicable).
Students who decide to withdraw must go in person to the Office of the Registrar (James Hall). You will need your UNCW I.D. card.
What if I Withdraw after the Deadline?
You will receive a "WF" for the course, which counts in your grade point average as an "F". The course will also be counted in your attempted hours (see above). A "WF" can be replaced if you repeat the course, according to UNCW's Course Repeat Policy
