What training is provided?
Each graduate student will attend both ARC and RA training in the weeks before the start of school. Training will orient you to the facilities, policies, procedures, and resources that are available to you in your position.
When does the job begin?
An official date will be released later, but we typically begin during the last full week of July with ARC training.
To which area will I be assigned?
There are eight areas across campus to which you may be assigned. Assignments are made mid-Spring after all positions have been filled. We attempt to place graduates in a situation that will give the student an opportunity to make connections with their field of study and allow them a strong working relationship with their supervisor.
How many hours per week do I work?
Most weeks average around 20-25 hours a week. You will attend weekly staff meetings with the department as well as meetings with your individual area. ARCs are also responsible for meetings, desk meetings, and office hours.
What is duty and how often am I on duty?
Graduates will take part in crisis coverage for the campus. In this capacity, graduates will help respond to assist in crisis situations, medical emergencies, and extreme disciplinary matters. Much of the initial training deals with handling these types of situations. ARCs are assigned to campus coverage 2-3weeks of the year. You will be responsible for holding a pager when you are on campus so that you may be contacted easily by the Housing and desk staffs.
Do we work during university holidays?
Graduates are allowed to leave campus during most university holidays, but you will be expected to make sure your duties are covered (through your RC) when you are gone. You may be asked to stay after students depart to assist in closing the residence halls for breaks.
Can I have another job?
Generally, we do not allow students to maintain additional employment outside of the position.
Am I limited in the number of courses and times that I may enroll in class?
Graduates are encouraged to enroll in no more than 12 semester hours.
How much of my time has to be spent on campus?
Graduates typically have one weekend per month to be completely away from campus. This time must be pre-approved by your immediate supervisor. Graduates are allowed to come and go as they please while remaining in the area while not on duty.
What does our compensation include?
Our compensation includes a meal plan, furnished apartment, parking permit, and a $625/month stipend. We also offer professional development both on and off campus. As a university student employee you will be paid on the 15th of every month.
What types of professional development are available?
Conferences, extra training, sessions with the professional staff, etc are all available to the ARC staff.
What types of academic programs have graduates previously been a part of?
Previous programs that the ARCs have pursued are: History, English, Public Administration, Fine Arts/Poetry, Mathematics, Education, Marine Science and Accounting
Do I have summer requirements?
During the summer, a wide variety of employment opportunities are available to graduate staff. These could include working with orientation, summer school or the main office. You are not required to be enrolled in summer school to maintain your employment.
Is insurance available/required?
UNCW offers renters insurance for a fee, but it is not required. Car insurance is required by both the state of North Carolina and UNCW. Currently, medical insurance is not required by UNCW, but that policy may soon be changing.
Do we get a chance to visit?
If you are interested in visiting UNCW and the Housing department please do so! We look forward to meeting you. UNCW Housing and Residence Life does not pay for the travel expenses. An interview weekend is planned for March 26 - 28, 2010.
