Innovative Students in the Clinical Setting

Clinical Group at DavisOne first-semester clinical group, led by clinical instructor Mitzi Averette, got it right.

Students were able to research and provide an innovative technique to assist an elderly person with communication deficits. One of the residents at Davis Health Care Center, who was alert and oriented but with demonstrated difficulties with verbal expression (aphasia) and use of her right side extremities, was aided using technological advancements.

The clinical students (with facility permission) were able to research and download an app on the resident’s iPad that provided the resident with a means of communication. On the last day of the clinical rotation the resident was up and running with her new communication tool. Students also discovered another app that can be used with patients on ventilators that prevent them from speaking.
