Degree Requirements

Sociology General Concentration

The number of credits to be earned for a B.A. in Sociology (general program) is 39 hours.  These hours should be distributed as follows:  SOC 105, 300, 301, 360, 490 and 24 additional hours of sociology course electives.

A maximum of nine hours below the 300 level (including SOC 105) may be used to satisfy the above requirements.

MAT 111 or higher is a pre-requisite or co-requisite for SOC/CRM 300 and must be completed before taking SOC/CRM 301.

An overall grade point average of 2.00 or better is required among sociology courses used to satisfy the major. Only one “D” is permitted among the core courses of SOC 105, 300, 301, 360, and 490.

*Advanced students may opt to complete an Honor's Thesis in Sociology (6 credits) and 21 additional hours of sociology course electives. The same restriction on courses below 300 applies. 

Oral Communication Competency Requirement:

To satisfy the oral communication competency requirement for the B.A. degree in Sociology (general program), a student must successfully complete SOC 490.*

Computer Competency Requirement:

To satisfy the computer competency requirement for the B.A. degree in Sociology (general program) a student must successfully complete SOC 301.

Applied Learning Requirement:

To satisfy the applied learning requirement for the B.A. degree in Sociology (general program) a student must successfully complete one of the following: SOC 300 (CRM 300), SOC 301 (CRM 301), SOC 490.

Public Sociology

The number of credits to be earned for a B.A. in Sociology (Public Sociology Program) is 39 hours.

Public Sociology students take SOC 390 (3 hours) – Public Sociology Seminar and SOC 496 (6 hours) Public Sociology Practicum.  SOC 390 is offered in the Fall and should be followed immediately in the Spring with SOC 496 Public Sociology Practicum.

The Public Sociology Seminar (SOC 390) in the fall semester prepares students to complete a practicum or internship experience in the following spring semester. Students can not register for a practicum in Public Sociology without taking SOC 390 first. Students must earn a C or better in SOC 390 in order to take SOC 496. Only one D is permitted among the core courses of SOC 105, 300, 301 and 360.An overall grade point average of 2.00 or better is required among sociology courses used to satisfy the major.

Oral Communication Competency Requirement:

To satisfy the oral communication competency requirement for the B.A. degree in Sociology (Public Sociology), a student must successfully complete SOC 496.

Computer Competency Requirement:

To satisfy the computer competency requirement for the B.A. degree in Sociology (General and Public Sociology program) a student must successfully complete SOC 301.

Applied Learning Requirement:

To satisfy the applied learning requirement for the B.A. degree in Sociology (General and Public Sociology program) a student must successfully complete one of the following: SOC 300 (CRM 300), SOC 301 (CRM 301), SOC 490

Minor in Sociology

The number of credits to be earned for a minor in Sociology is 21 hours, including SOC 105 and 18 additional hours of sociology courses. A maximum of six hours below the 300 level (including SOC 105) may be used to satisfy the above requirements. Also, an overall grade point average of 2.00 or better is required among sociology courses used to satisfy the minor.
