Community Health Education
Our program offers a community health concentration that meets
the diverse needs for health education specialists in a variety of settings such
as public schools, colleges, public and nonprofit health agencies, professional
organizations, hospital health promotion centers, government agencies and
corporate and commercial wellness centers.
As part of their training, students participate in field practicum to apply the skills they have acquired. Graduates may find themselves implementing and evaluating programs dealing with unhealthy behaviors such as tobacco use, obesity, drugs and alcohol, violence, healthy sexual behavior as well as programs that promote exercise, nutrition and overall good health practices.
Belville Healthy Families Night Healthy Families Night was designed to support families in their health practices. More than 50 families took part on Monday, February 20, at Belville Elementary School. This event was a combined effort of UNCW's College of Health and Human Services (Community Health Education, Physical Education, Exercise Science, Pediatric Nursing), UNCW's Student Health Association and Pre-Dental Club, the Brunswick County Health Department, O² Fitness, Harris Teeter of Leland, Food Lion of Leland, Staples of Wilmington, Target of Wilmington, Sweet & Sassy of Wilmington, and Belville Elementary School. Special thanks to Dr. Darwin Dennison for sharing the "Dine Healthy" program, Dr. Wayland Tseh for the loan of skin calipers for body fat analysis, and to Carrie Newman and Robin Bell of Belville Elementary School for donating their time. Kudos to our Community Health Education planning student team: Sheronda McLean, Ali Mendoza, Macy Johnson, and Casey Quick. This type of effort is what community health education is all about. |
