Academic Requirements for a B.A. in Psychology (Pre-2011 Curriculum)

The Department of Psychology implemented a new curriculum in the Fall of 2011. This involved adding new courses, changing the number designations of existing courses, and implementing new course requirements for students entering UNCW in the 2011-2012 school year or later.

Students who enter UNCW in the 2011-2012 school year or later will follow the requirements for the Psychology Major as described here (The New Psychology Curriculum).

Students who entered UNCW in the 2010-2011 school year or earlier are eligible to graduate under the old requirements (those existing prior to August 2011) as described in the next section [Academic Requirements for the B.A. (Pre-2011 Curriculum)]. Information about navigating the requirements for the Psychology Major or Minor during the transition to the new curriculum are provided below. Academic Requirements for a B.A. in Psychology (Pre-2011 Curriculum)

The B.A. degree in Psychology requires 49 hours of course work in psychology consisting of (a) PSY 105, 225, 355, & 405; (b) one course from each of the five categories listed below; and (c) twelve additional hours in Psychology courses at the 300-400 level. PSY 210, 245 or 265 may be substituted for three of these additional twelve hours.

  • Category 1: PSY 220, 221, 223, 320, or 324.
  • Category 2: PSY 410, 412 or 417. [PSY 423, 464, & 425 (4-hr lab version) will also count for Category 2].
  • Category 3: PSY 418, 456 or 457.
  • Category 4: PSY 346, 347 or 365
  • Category 5: PSY 350, 352, 425 or 465.

The following additional requirements must also be met:

  • A grade of C or better is required in PSY 105.
  • An average grade of C (2.0) or better is required in the three courses required for admission to the major (i.e., PSY 105 and the required Biology & Math courses; see Admission Requirements for a Major in Psychology).
  • PSY 225, PSY 355, & the PSY-Category 2 course must be taken in sequence; thus, students are advised to begin this sequence as earlier as possible.
  • No more than one course with a grade of D can count toward the requirements for a major in Psychology.
  • There must be a C (2.0) or better average on all courses that are counted towards the major.

Navigating the Requirements of the New Curriculum for the Psychology Major:

  • Required course (105, 225, 355, 405) are unchanged.
  • Category 1 is unchanged.
  • Category 2-new prerequisites for 410, 412, and 417 will not be enforced during the transition to the new major requirements (355 will continue to be the prerequisite for these courses). 423, 425 (only the 4 credit version with the lab), and 464 may be used as Category 2 classes.
  • Category 3-the new 256 prerequisite for 356, 456 &457 will not be enforced during the transition to the new major requirements. 256** may be used as a Category 3 class.
  • Category 4-246, 247, and 264 will count in this category.
  • Category 5-317 will count in this category. New prerequisite for 317, 352 and 465 will not be enforced during the transition to the new major requirement.
  • 6 hrs from the following courses may be counted toward the 12 hrs of required psychology electives: 211, 217, 246, 245, 247, 256**, 257, 264, 265, 270, 271 and 275.

Navigating the Requirements of the New Curriculum for the Psychology Minor:

  • 6 hrs from 220, 221, 223, 320, 324, 366 (unchanged from existing curriculum).
  • 6 hrs from 346, 347 350, 352, and 365 (246, 247, 264, and 317 will count in this category).
  • In addition, 3 hrs from 211, 217, 245, 246, 264, 256**, 257, 265, 270, 271, and 275 or any PSY course at the 300 or 400 level.

Important Notes for both the Psychology Major and Minor:

*Credit may be obtained for only ONE of the following course pairs:

  • 246-346
  • 247-347
  • 264-365
  • 270-470
  • 317-350
  • 356-418

**Students may not receive credit for 256 if they have completed 456
