Susanne (Sue) Johnson takes Student Affairs’ motto, “Creating Experiences for Life,” to heart.
“We aren’t just creating experiences for our students, we are also creating great working experiences in our own lives,” she said. “Our division of 160-plus is much like a family focused on helping students succeed and preparing them for life after college.”
Providing support by giving to UNCW is important to Johnson because the programs and resources she contributes to make a difference in the lives of many – herself included. Johnson is also a student, taking classes towards a degree in criminal justice. She touts the staff tuition waiver benefit and textbook scholarship program as great employee perks.
In addition to monetary donations, Johnson encourages others to volunteer for campus-wide events, like Move-In and Commencement, as opportunities to stay connected with each other and the greater community.
After relocating to Wilmington from Long Island, NY, 14 years ago, Johnson discovered UNCW while attending events held on campus. “I was amazed by the beauty of the campus and felt that UNCW was where I should be.” She began her career at the university in 2010.
For the past two years, Johnson has served on a committee to help implement the UNCW Administrative Professionals Summit (spearheaded by Molly Nece from human resources). The group provides tools and resources to help administrative professionals succeed in their roles. Most recently, she was selected to serve as a committee member on the Retention (Recognition) Talent Advisory Board, also spearheaded by HR.
“This is a pilot program focused on engaging, developing and retaining our employees. I’m excited to have this opportunity to use my skills to contribute to the success of others,” she said.
Outside of UNCW, Johnson enjoys spending time with her husband and friends and being a “soccer mom” to her four-year-old son, Noah.
